Student Voice
"Lobby the University to place students in all University Task Groups and as many University Committees to make sure more voices than just mine and the Vice-President are heard by the University."
Student Voice is the most powerful tool that all students have to make change, however the current model used by the university is to have myself or the vice-president on every task group/committee as "student voice", I believe this should change and their should be more than just the two full-time officers on every group, instead every student should have the opportunity to be part of the university decision making system.
"Deliver my vision for a 21st century Academic Feedback System that suits the needs of Newman’s students, and doesn’t just follow what every other SU does. We need a Feedback System that benefits Newman Students that doesn’t leave students waiting weeks for answers to their concerns."
The current course rep system has been in it's current form for over 10 years now, and desperately needs a shot of adrenaline to be truly effective. The system is clunky and causes students to have to wait for weeks if not months for their feedback to be heard. I am proposing a new system that requires buy-in from students, staff and the university as a whole. This will take a long time to implement, however will benefit all students once implemented.
"To utilise the new officer hour’s structure in the Students’ Union to make sure I am available more often for students, including one evening per week and occasional weekends, to give every student the opportunity to feedback to the SU face to face."
The Students' Union has historically always been poor at engaging with students who don't attend university at "normal" times. This is something we need to change, and with the moves towards flexible working that the SU has taken, I will be able to be at university campus outside of those "normal hours" to support students who need it. Furthermore, with a full-time officer being available more of the Students' Union's services such as the Advice Clinic will also be able to be open to support students.
"I will lobby the University to be much more transparent of what student fees are spent on and to release a document explain where your fees go."
In 2020, Course Fees are at the highest they have ever been before, but still students don't know where their money goes. I aim to change this, I will lobby the university to inform students where their course fees go and how they are spent, giving students a better understanding of exactly what they are paying for.
